Three AI assistant emblems lined up side by side as a fair business comparison

Every week a business owner asks me the same thing. Which AI assistant should we actually pay for? The honest answer in 2026 is that ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are all genuinely good now, so the real question is not which is “best” but which one fits the way your business already works.

In a nutshell: ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini have become close rivals, and for most small businesses any of the three will do the job. ChatGPT is the flexible all-rounder with the biggest set of app connections. Claude is the strongest pick if your team does a lot of writing, drafting and document work. Gemini is the obvious choice if you already run on Google Workspace, because it now comes built into the apps you pay for. The entry business plans all sit around the same price, so the smart move is to match the tool to your existing setup, run a short trial, and not overthink it.

1. The short answer on ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini

A small business owner calmly choosing between three near-identical doorways A year ago there were clear gaps between these tools. Today those gaps have mostly closed. All three can draft emails, summarise long documents, analyse a spreadsheet, answer customer questions and help you think through a decision. For everyday business work, you are unlikely to hit a wall with any of them.

That is good news, because it means you do not need to agonise over benchmarks. The differences that matter for a small business are practical ones. Where does the tool live? What does it plug into? Who on your team will actually use it? Those questions will steer you to the right answer far faster than any “best AI assistant for business” league table.

So treat the three sections below as a fit test, not a contest. Read them with your own business in mind.

2. ChatGPT: the flexible all-rounder

ChatGPT is the one most of your staff have already tried, and that familiarity counts for a lot. It is a strong generalist that handles writing, analysis, brainstorming and customer replies without fuss. Its biggest practical edge is the sheer number of tools it connects to. The business plan links into Slack, Google Drive, SharePoint, GitHub and more than 60 other apps, so it can pull in your real work rather than sitting in a separate window. (OpenAI pricing)

On price, ChatGPT Business runs at $20 per user per month on an annual plan, or $25 billed monthly, with a minimum of two users. OpenAI says it does not train its models on your business data on this plan. (OpenAI pricing)

Pick ChatGPT if you want a safe, capable default that most people can pick up on day one, and you value having lots of integrations to grow into.

3. Claude: built for writing and careful work

Claude, made by Anthropic, has a reputation for being the best of the three at long-form writing and careful reasoning. If your business lives on words, things like proposals, reports, client emails, policies and marketing copy, many people find Claude’s drafts need less editing. It is also well suited to reading a long document and pulling out what matters.

Claude’s paid individual plan, Pro, is $20 per month. For teams there is a Team plan with a minimum of five seats, which adds shared admin controls plus integrations with tools like Microsoft 365 and Slack. (Claude pricing)

Pick Claude if writing quality is your priority, or if a lot of your week is spent turning messy information into clear, well-worded documents.

4. Gemini: already inside your Google apps

If your business runs on Gmail, Docs and Sheets, Gemini has a head start the others cannot match. Google now bundles Gemini directly into its paid Workspace plans rather than selling it as a separate add-on, so the AI sits right inside the apps your team already opens every day. (Google Workspace)

That changes the cost picture. Because Gemini is included, many businesses effectively get it as part of a subscription they already pay for. Google’s Business Standard plan, around $14 per user per month on an annual plan, includes the full Gemini features across Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Meet. (Google Workspace)

Pick Gemini if you are already a Google Workspace business, because it is the least disruptive option and may cost you nothing extra.

5. How to actually choose

Start with the stack you already have. If you live in Google Workspace, trial Gemini first. If your team already leans on Microsoft and a pile of other apps, ChatGPT’s connectors make it a natural fit. If your work is writing-heavy, give Claude a fair run. This single question settles most decisions.

Then run a real pilot rather than a demo. Pick one or two genuine tasks, give the tool a fortnight, and judge it on your own work and not a sales page. The entry business plans cluster around the same modest monthly price, so the cost of trying is low and switching later is easy. You are not locking yourself in for life.

One last thing. You do not have to pick just one. Plenty of small businesses let staff use whichever assistant suits the task, and the monthly cost of two tools is still small against the time they save. The bottom line

There is no single winner in ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini, and that is the point. Match the assistant to the tools and tasks you already have, trial it on real work for a couple of weeks, and you will land on the right one without the headache.
